Well, I guess "congratulations" are in order for the C2 Reprographics team.

On February 8, 2011, the "Board" of the Beverly Hills Unified School District selected C2 Reprographics to provide reprographics and document management services.

This was, evidently, a hotly contested contest. Vendors who submitted proposals included:

- C2 Reprographics

- American Reprographics (ARC)

- ABC Imaging

- Universal Reprographics

- Repro Express

Joel’s comment:

According to the “transcript” of the earnings call that American Reprographics Co (ARC) held on February 22nd, 2011, Jonathan Mather, ARC’s CFO, said this about ARC’s sales revenues in 2010 as compared to 2009:

“On a regional basis, our year-over-year revenue performance for 2010 was as follows. Southern California was down 10.5%, Northern California was down 3.1%. The Pacific Northwest was down 7.1%, our Southern region was down 9.4%. The Midwest was down 7.5% and the Northeast was down 12.6%.”

Given C2 Reprographics’ aggressive decision to launch two new locations in the Southern California market within the past 9 months, it “sounds like” C2 Repro may not have experienced a year-over-year decline in sales revenues like ARC did. Could it be that C2 Repro has found a way to take “market share” away from ARC?

OCB Reprographics and Consolidated Reprographics both begin operating under the ARC brand name

Yesterday, I noticed an article in the Orange County Register (newspaper, the on-line edition) about the “name change” of two ARC-owned companies, OCB and CR.

For those of you who haven’t seen this news, here’s the article:

Two Orange County printers, OCB Reprographics and Consolidated Reprographics, are changing their names to their parent company, American Reprographics Co., or ARC for short.

The name change is effective immediately but will be introduced throughout the year. Both companies will continue to serve Orange County, said ARC senior regional vice president Roger Lackey, who started his career working on OCB's production floor.

ARC is a publicly traded company based in Walnut Creek.

Irvine-based OCB was founded in 1926 and has locations in Irvine, Costa Mesa and Orange. Costa Mesa-based CR was founded in 1966 and has locations in Tustin, Costa Mesa and Anaheim.

OCB joined ARC in 1993, and CR joined the larger company in 2002.

"We're taking on the name of the company we've helped build," Lackey said. "OCB and CR were built from the ground up here in Orange County. ARC offered both companies a chance to take it a step further, and we all jumped at the opportunity."

Historically, reprographics has been a niche business serving the construction industry and printing large format documents such as blueprints for architects, engineers and builders. More recently, reprographic companies have taken on small-format documents, color imaging and software for a variety of industries.

Joel’s comment:

This isn’t new news. It’s my understanding that this news was issued as a “Press Release” over a month ago, even though it may not be published on www.e-arc.com.

As most reprographers are aware, OCB [owned by David Hayes and his brother before it was sold to ARC (and, after ARC acquired OCB, it was run by Chuck Hayes, David’s step-son, until he passed away)] and Consolidated Reprographics (CR) [which was, prior to ARC’s purchase, owned by Lason Corp, who purchased CR from Greg Lundeen and partners (after the business was purchased by them from Phil Siegel)] are both very large, well-established players in the Southern, CA marketplace. Prior to ARC’s acquisition of OCB and CR, they were very keen competitors, but, in spite of the competition, both managed to grow large and quite profitable. ARC maintained the “separate” brand names (and operations) of each for years beyond ARC’s purchase of the companies. I would venture to guess that ARC’s decision to “consolidate” the two companies under one name, the ARC name, was driven mostly by the cost savings that will be derived from the consolidation of the two businesses. C2 Repro competes in that same market, and, rumor has it, that C2 Repro is expanding and doing quite well, in spite of the recession and in spite of the fact that ARC (OCB/CR) is a very formidable competitor.

Prior to the consolidation, A/E/C firms in the Orange County market basically had three “major” brands to choose from, OCB, CR or C2. Now A/E/C firms will have only two, ARC and C2.

C2 Repro adds another highly experienced person to its Management Team

Together Again, Brothers Eric and Evan Gaydon Join Regional Powerhouse C2 Reprographics

COSTA MESA, CA - - February 21, 2011 -

Evan Gaydon has joined C2 Reprographics as its director of sales. His brother Eric Gaydon, who joined the company in October of last year, has been appointed to the executive team at C2 Reprographics. Both men, natives of Tustin, are well-known in the Orange County reprographics industry.

As director of sales, Evan Gaydon will support the growth of the company's expanding direct sales force with emphasis in the color segment. Evan comes to C2 after a distinguished career in sales at another large competitor, where he worked his way up from his first job in 1994 as a Xerox operator. He was promoted to assistant manager for DocuTech and digital publishing, then assistant manager of the Xerox department. After 10 years working in production, he says, "I talked my way into the sales department as the digital publishing specialist, then went on to become the color specialist and supported 20 sales reps. When the market took a downward turn I was promoted to sales lead, managing a seasoned team of five reps with a yearly base of $15 million in revenue."

As a new member of C2's executive team, Evan's brother Eric, director of color operations, will lead the strategy of C2's color growth globally and support the strategic direction of the firm. In his previous job of 18 years at a competing firm, where Evan also worked, he built the color and mounting department to an enterprise of $1 million per month in revenue. He has been recognized by the Xerox Corporation for "best eye for color in Southern California."

Eric says he exerted no influence over Evan's decision to join C2 Reprographics. "Evan always makes excellent decisions; he is very professional and always provides the best for his clients."

Added C2 President and CEO Gary Crisp, "I couldn't be more pleased with the addition of Eric and Evan Gaydon to the C2 family. Their significant industry knowledge, exceptional talent, strong work ethic, and relentless focus on superior customer service make them a perfect fit for C2."
